We are all concerned how the National Health Care bill will affect us. There are some steps we can take to improve our health and possibly lower our medical expenses.
First, take some 'steps'. Walking is one of the best exercises, doesn't require joining a gym or having special equipment, and can be done by most everyone. With the heat wave we need to get up early and walk before it gets hot. Start out walking for 5 minutes, add a few minutes every week until you can walk for 30 minutes. If you find that 30 minutes is too much, divide up the time, walk 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time. If you can't walk outside, walk around inside your house. You could head to Home Depot and walk up and down the aisles or walk the aisles at HEB, then start over and shop for your groceries.
"Commercial" exercises: every half hour TV show has 20 minutes of programming and 10 minutes of commercials. Commercials are usually 2 minutes long. Do some leg lifts - lift and straighten then lower your leg, switch and do the same with the other leg. Keep your knees bent and alternate raising your foot off the floor. Make a fist and do some bicep curls, raise your arms to shoulder level or over your head, lift your arms to the side, and reach away and across your chest. Stand by the kitchen or bathroom sink, hold on to the counter top and raise your heels off the floor. Shift your weight from one foot to the other. You will easily get 30 minutes of exercise in one day/night without a lot of effort.
The Bulverde Senior Center has a chair fitness class on Monday morning at 9:30. Check it out.
KLRN has "Sit and Be Fit" at 11:00 a.m. weekdays. This is an excellent exercise program for seniors. You can work at your own level.
There are several other classes available, from which you may choose. Pick up a monthly calendar from the table by the front door to see days and times of classes you might be interested in. We now also have wonderful exercise equipment available, also, that was recently donated to BSC.
If you would like more exercise classes at the senior center, please share suggestions with the BSC office personnel. As our membership grows, we strive to provide activities desired by both new members and those who have been members for many years. Your input is appreciated.
Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise plan.
Don’t forget our Homemade Ice Cream Social at BSC on Saturday, August 8, from 1 to 3 PM. Games will be played.

Entering the BSC facility on Saturday, felt like an enchanting wonderland. Eleven tables were beautifully set up, each with a different theme. There were live flowers and plants, gorgeous table cloths, dinner ware and unusual centerpieces. Each volunteer hostess had provided everything, for her table, including favors and deserts. There was no doubt that we have extremely creative and talented members at BSC. Our hostesses included Rene’ Buckwelder, Dianna Burke, Kimberly Dean, Patti Eastman, Linda Hartman, Jeanne Keller, Nelda Martinez, Romayne Mertens, Tonie Rogers, Sara Ross, and Nancy Talley.
Attending this event were representatives from Well Med. We have been blessed by Well Med’s support. They not only sponsored our 2009 5K Run, but also our 2009 Style Show and Luncheon.
A very special attendee was our former BSC Director, Bonnie Flagg. Bonnie retired a few years ago, and moved to the Texas coast with her husband. It was a rare treat for so many of us to visit with her.
Lunch was prepared by our own Easy Pace Culinary Group, including Mary Austad, Patti Eastman, Barbara Gottardy, Jeanne Keller, Lorraine Little, Gay Morgan, Tonie Rogers and Sara Ross. The lunch was delicious. Again, we were reminded of the creative talent within BSC.
Teens gave up their Saturday fun and volunteered to serve us, making up our wait staff. . They were very attentive and much appreciated. Although I don’t have all of their names, they know who they are and we thank them.
Joyce Urban played the piano as a background for the models as they made their way around the tables. Mary Austad announced each model and described her attire. Fall fashions were presented by the Dress Barn at Hwy. 281 and 1604. Modeling and looking very professional in this role, were our own Nancy Becker, Dianna Burke, Genell Fray, Linda Hartman, GailHortick, and Nelda Martinez, along with Well Med representatives, Chris Lee and Rachel Vela.
Tonie Rogers announced the names drawn for door prizes, as models changed outfits to show at the next segment. Door prizes were donated by area businesses and many individuals, too numerous to name. Local businesses providing door prizes included American Bank, Broadway Bank, Honey Creek Gourmet, The Hair Saloon, K-9 Comforts, Wildflower Antiques and Boutique, Mague’s Mexican Restaurant, Sassy Spur, Tractor Supply, La Bella Vita, Piece of Candy Bakery, Tuscany, Cactus Flower, Picadillo, La Vie en Rose, All About Skin, 46th Street Pizzeria, Choices and More and Tangles. The Raffle Basket, “Pots of Pretty” was donated by Connie Maunsell. There were many happy winners when the day was done.
BSC members know that our director, Kimberly Dean, will be making a trip this week to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We ask that you keep Kim in your prayers that doctors are guided in her healing. A special account has been set up in her name at Broadway Bank for anyone who wishes to make a donation to help with her expenses.
